Woonhuis is pleased to present LOTTO, a new exhibition opening on 2 April. Join us for the opening event and the first moment to experience the exhibition. On this evening we will also host the special ‘daisy bar’, a cocktail bar by Derya Akay.

Across painting, objects and spatial arrangements, LOTTO reflects on how an artistic practice unfolds within a moment of instability or uncertainty. Moving between intimate everyday gestures and wider atmospheric forces, Yips works create an environment where images, references and shapes circulate and resonate with one another.

In some works Yip draws on the visual language of everyday treat culture like cappuccinos, matcha drinks and the carefully poured patterns of barista foam imagery that circulate widely online and subtly bind together a dispersed communitiy of viewers. Across the exhibition, different elements create an environment where everyday gestures entangle more charged atmospheres.

For this show we have asked writer and critic Martin Herbert to contribute a new text, he writes:

“If there is an element, in all this, of wresting something from catastrophe, it’s perhaps epitomised by Yip’s semiabstract paintings rooted in violent celestial phenomena, explosive lightning etc, which avowedly have their roots in Gilles Deleuze’s thoughts about how painting might emerge from what he terms, a little gnomically, a ‘catastrophe’ in the early stage of making… It might also be appropriate that they relate to atmospheric conditions, because Yip’s entire show is a climate, an airspace crackling with ions, rather than a statement.” Find the full text in the exhibition brochure.

Rather than presenting a fixed statement, LOTTO unfolds as a shifting constellation of works and references. Contemplation emerges between images and conversations, and between encounters within the exhibition itself. We welcome you from April 2 onwards in Woonhuis.

Opening event

For the opening we are delighted to host daisy bar, a travelling cocktail bar by artist and cook Derya Akay.

Operating somewhere between bar, kitchen and sculpture, Daisy Bar treats hospitality as its working material. Each iteration adapts to its setting with a small menu of cocktails and snacks built from seasonal ingredients and kitchen experiments such as infusions, ferments, acids and homemade liqueurs.

About Derya Akay

Derya Akay is an artist and cook based in Frankfurt. Their practice moves between installation, food, living things, writing and reflection, often drawing on processes such as cooking, fermenting and gardening to think through time, seasons and transformation.

Daisy Bar grows out of earlier food and bar projects including Girl Dinner at Pale Fire Projects (Vancouver) and Estradiol Kitchen at Moodswing Bar (New Westminster). Akay currently studies at Städelschule in the class of Dora Budor and holds a BFA from Emily Carr University (Vancouver).
